Description of the PMC Service
Area
The
Rose Lake Plant Materials Center is located in the southern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan
and provides plant solutions for the Great Lakes Region. Agriculture is diversified throughout the Rose Lake PMC service area. It
includes dairy, beef cattle, cash crop, truck-crop, and nursery operations.
Timber production is important in the northern part of the service
area. Much of the area is affected by large urban populations, making recreation
an important enterprise. The special problems throughout most of the service
area are associated with glaciated soils, muck lands, sand dunes, and mine
spoils.
Climatic conditions affecting plant growth include temperature extremes of -35
to + 95 degrees Fahrenheit, annual precipitation from 25 to 45 inches, growing
season varying from 50 to 200 days, and soil textures varying from light sand to
very heavy soils. Major conservation concerns include stabilization of
streambanks, shorelines, and roadbanks; improving pasture land; and increasing
the availability and use of locally native species.
