The Big Flats Plant Materials Center in Big Flats, New York is involved in the following studies and activities to address the above resource issues. For more information on these studies please contact the PMC at (607) 562-8404.

Study Number Study Name Description Duration
36A187R Eastern gamagrass breeding A plant breeding program to develop eastern gamagrass accession adapted to the Northeast with excellent agronomic values. Being a perennial plant, this has the potential to replace silage corn on sloping cropland to control soil erosion. 1987-2008
36A190T Intermediate wheatgrass Evaluation To develop an intermediate wheatgrass adapted to the Northeast as an alternative perennial grain crop. This study involves recurrent phenotypic selection breeding program in cooperation with Rodale Research Institute. 1990-2012
36C198M Cover Crop Establishment at Time of Corn Planting To determine which cover crop species and herbicides can be used to establish cover crops and corn at the same time for improved effectiveness of cover crops 1998-2007
36I185G Evaluation of Indiangrass To select a native perennial warm season grass for improved mid-summer grazing and in wildlife improvement habitat adapted in the Northeast. 1985-2007
36I292F Evaluation of prairie cordgrass To select a perennial warm season grass that is native to the Northeast states for erosion control along fresh water shorelines and potential use in created wetlands, critical area treatment and biomass production. 1992-2009
36S392B National Park Project Cooperative agreement with National Park Service to develop and increase plant material to revegetate disturbed areas in the park. This involves producing seed and plants of grasses, forbs, shrubs and trees. 1992-2006
NYPMC-P-0009-CR Evaluation of American and Champlain Beachgrass To develop and release a native beachgrass for the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain to stabilize the shoreline dune systems. 2000-2008
NYPMC-P-0101-CR Evaluation of Native Warm Season Grasses To develop warm season grasses that are native to the northeast for use in conservation plantings, wildlife seedings, and critical area treatment. 2001-2008
NYPMC-P-0301-RI Evaluation of Canada Bluejoint To develop a new release of a native cool season grass for off-drainage sites, wetland revegetation, buffer/riparian plantings and wildlife habitat seedings. 2003-2010
NYPMC-P-0302-WL Evaluation of Canada Wildrye To develop a new release of Canada wildrye with a wide genetic base for use in the Northeast as part of a native cool season grass mix for seeding from wildlife habitat to disturbed areas. 2003-2010
NYPMC-P-0303-WL Evaluation of Virginia Wildrye To develop a new release of a native Virginia wildrye with wide genetic diversity for use in the northeast in grass seedings for wildlif habitat to disturbed areas. 2003-2010
NYPMC-P-0411-RI Aerenchyma Root Field Study To evaluate some of the most promising species of warm season grasses from the greenhouse study for use in saturated soils of riparian areas. Need to verify the results from the greenhouse pot study to real field conditions. Also, to observe the performance of several accession of a native cool season grass Virginia wildrye. 2004-2007
NYPMC-P-0423-WI Vegetative Buffers for Improved Air Quality on CAFO Farms- PA cooperative project. Working on a cooperative project with NRCS SO in PA on looking at odor reduction on large CAFO farms, especially farms with tunnel fans, by using trees as a buffer/windbreak. The working group is made up of NRCS, Penn State Univ. Poultry Sci and Hort Departs, Cooperative Extension, Wenger Feeds, and farmers. Plantings have been placed on over 15 farms and Penn State Univ has been conducting studies testing trees. BFPMC has provided technical input and plants for the sites. 2004-2010
NYPMC-P-0504-WL Evaluation of Bur Oak 2005-2020
NYPMC-P-0601-WL Evaluation of Sideoats Grama 2006-2012
NYPMC-S-0010-WL Glacial Lake Albany Little Bluestem Evaluation To develop and release a native little bluestem for the Glacial Lake Albany arrea/northeast for use in wildlife seedings, restoration, and critical area treatment. 2000-2010
NYPMC-S-9803-WL Albany Pine Bush Preserve Native Plants Development of local ecotypes for the restoration of unique natural areas in the glacial lake Albany region in coperation with the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission. 1998-2008
NYPMC-T-0401-WL Native Cool Season Grass Mixes Seeding Rate Study To determine the optimun seeding rates of native cool season grasses when seeded in mixtures. 2004-2006
NYPMC-T-0501-RI Riparian Buffer Woody Plant Direct Seeding Study To study the effects of herbicides on the direct seeding of woody plants in riparian areas. 2005-2007
NYPMC-T-0603-WL Native Cool Season/Warm Season Grass Mixture Study at Arnot Forest FEP To determine optimum seeding rates of native cool and warm season grass mixtures and evaluate their ability to establishment a diverse grass stand. 2006-2009
NYPMC-T-0604-WL Native Cool Season Grass Mixture Study at Arnot Forest FEP 2006-2010
