Description of the Corvallis Plant Materials Center Service Area
The Corvallis PMC service area includes
the northern Pacific Coast Range, Willamette Valley and Puget Sound, as well
as Olympic, Cascade, and Siskiyou Mountains of western Washington and
Oregon.
The rainfall of the area ranges from 200 inches
near the coast to 20 inches in some valleys. Abundant rainfall contributes
to excessive erosion in winter and spring. The topography and natural
vegetation is typified by heavily forested coastal terraces, steep
mountains, grass balds, foothills and valleys, nearly level to gently
sloping flood plains with woodland prairies, and Savanna vegetation in the
Willamette valley and Puget lowlands. Agriculture and timber production are
important to the region. Products include lumber, grass and legume seed,
grain crops, nursery stock, dairy, Christmas trees, nuts, fruits, and
vegetables.
Wind and water erosion are critical problems
on coastal dunes, roadsides, construction sites, dredge spoils, cultivated
horticultural cropland, and logging areas. Water quality is a main concern
in areas of concentrated livestock, farming, and urban activities. Degraded
fish habitat, streambanks and wetlands are in need of enhancement and
restoration. Getting to the Corvallis Plant Materials Center
The Corvallis Plant Materials Center is
located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon approximately 81 miles south of
Portland, the largest city in the state. From Portland take I-5 south to
Albany, Oregon and exit at Highway 99E (exit 234). This is also known as
Pacific Blvd. Traveling west about 2 miles on Pacific Blvd., take the
Highway 20 exit on the right hand side. Follow Highway 20 through the
downtown business district and over the Willamette River. From the River,
drive approximately 5 miles to Granger Ave. and turn west (right) onto
Granger. The office is at 3415 NE Granger Ave., approximately 1000 ft from
the intersection. (See map provided below.)
